I know I’ve written about common resume mistakes before BUT here I go again.

Sharing is caring!

  1. Proofread.  Seriously. Proofread all the documents you include when applying to any job.  One silly typo can truly cost you that dream job.

  2. If the job posting requires a cover letter -- make it count.   The cover letter is a quick and dirty way to measure your writing ability.  Make the cover letter personal. Employers want to know why you want “this job.”  Showcase what you know about the company and how you are the right person for this role.

  3. PROOFREAD!  Did you really send a cover letter stating why you want the Customer Service role but applied for a Project Coordinator role!  Generic cover letters and resumes are your enemy. Read the job description and tailor your resume and cover letter to fit the role you want.  Remember! The resume gets you the interview. No interview. No chance of getting the job.

  4. Your resume isn’t in chronological order.  If a recruiter has to piece together your employment they will move on.  I know some believe it’s best to show the most relevant role(s) first but that’s not necessarily true.  Your resume is a timeline of your experience. Don’t assume you know what a recruiter or hiring manager is looking for on a resume.  Certain skills in any role may be transferable in a new role.

  5. Recent college grad -- showcase that degree up top on the resume.  Seasoned professional with work experience -- showcase your duties and accomplishments.

BONUS TIP!  Please stop stating you have 15 or more years of experience and applying to entry-level roles.  1. You’re aging yourself and ageism is REAL. Yes, it’s illegal but it’s real! 2. No one believes you will stay in the role. 3. Know your worth.
